Social Poker

To many people, what popularized poker over the years was its tradition to bring strangers together. It confined their deceptions with each other around the card table. It allowed them to either give or take their opponent's dough away. It gave them permission with their wives to drink beer at home. Truly, this is not your usual formula to sustain friendships. But it is in this method that the game grew up in their dining table, and not in Las Vegas or in any other casinos.

Social poker has become America's unofficial national pastime. But it is a pastime that has nothing to do with wins or losses. By contrast, a group playing poker is a humbling scene. Antes are commonly up to three dollars only, bets don't exceed five dollars. Usually, you would see lawyers, writers, and a cab driver together. Some are successful and others are not so successful. But all that are thrown out the window.

The game is not about bucks, status, or ego. What players come back for is the fellowship. It's a few beers, a lot of laughs, a lot of reminiscing, and most of all, a Thursday get together. Sometimes, it's also about opportunities and networking. This happens someone brings a new friend, and you trade notes with that fellow. You begin to strike up a useful conversation.

Home pokers are safe. That's why they're not illegal in many states. It's only against the law if and when the host charged its players for the use of his domicile. Ask a majority of a group playing social pokers and they would say that the game might ensue arguments, but there would be no fights or prolonged feuds. Most of the time, everyone leaves their ill feelings on the table.

To build action on your social poker, you'll need to have a group consisting at least six players. If your group consists of eight friends, you'll definitely be playing for fun and foolishness. And the last thing it is about is gambling.

You can spot a lot of houses in the suburbs with their dining tables lit up at night and see a group playing the pastime. A number of these groups have lasted for years or maybe decades. So believe me when I tell you that these groups are not playing for high stakes or nickel dime poker. They're just playing an old friend's game.
